A Lifetime of Creativity
Bio
Ian’s career in art started when his father, who had been a graphic designer for a few years, taught him to use a free vector art software called Inkscape back in 2007. Hardly a day went by that Ian wasn't glued to his computer screen, creating art and finding new ways to bring his own imagination to life; from ideas for new video games, to designing logos just like his dad, to inventing his own characters. Then, in 2016 he was introduced to Dungeons and Dragons and the two worlds collided in a spectacular way. He drew character after character, for himself, his friends and for his Dungeon Master. This is what set him on his path towards becoming a professional artist and now he sells commissioned character art online as he pursues a degree in Art and Studio Design at Eastern Kentucky University.
Statement
Imagine, if you will, that you are me. You look in the mirror and see a tall dude with brown hair and an unkempt beard, dressed like an emo lumberjack who watched too many episodes of Vikings. You, being me, already know that you are a digital artist who works primarily in vector based programs like Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape. Your work often dances on the edge of unsettling, and plays with themes of dark humor and general edgy goth dude aesthetic. You think that rules are there to be challenged, and you like to use your work as a platform to express creative identity and to continually experiment and push boundaries. You don’t like to conform to anyone's status quo, whether in your art or in your personal life. You try to find every chance to celebrate individuality. You love to learn new things and you bounce around from project to project like some kind of over caffeinated rabbit. When you think about your influences, names like Van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Tim Burton, Mike Mignola, and D.J. Phillips bounce around in your skull like over caffeinated squirrels. When you think about what inspires you to make art, things like Edgar Allen Poe’s poems, J.R.R Tolkien’s writings, the Peter Pan stories, as well as video games like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Halo, Destiny, Assassin’s Creed, and Kingdom Hearts, or movies and shows like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Firefly, Robin Hood, and Hook, or tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons rattle around your mind like an over caffeinated rattlesnake. Maybe you should lay off the caffeine.
When you think about your earliest influences though, you remember when your dad would teach you how to make art on the computer, or the first time that your mom got you one of those “How to draw anime style” books from the library, or the kid you sat next to in middle school who drew the coolest dinosaurs.
You know that you could not have gotten to where you are now without the constant support from all of your friends, family, awesome high school art teachers, nifty college art professors, and your loving girlfriend.
